The beautiful weather and warm months bring out a number of bikers and motorcycle riders. Some wear helmets for safety while others choose not to. But, in some states it is the law that a motorcycle rider must wear a helmet while operating their vehicle. While one can understand the reasoning and push behind wanting drivers to wear helmets while on their bikes, some states have enacted some stiff penalties to get their point across. States like Georgia, Hawaii, and Nevada have some of the highest fines for not wearing a helmet, clocking in a $1,000. Georgia can give up to 12 months of jail time and Nevada can give up to 6 months. Utah comes in second with a fine of $750 and 3 months in jail. As drivers cross state lines they must be aware that the new state’s laws apply to them while using their roadways and this includes helmet laws. Currently, only Iowa, Illinois, and New Hampshire allow motorcycles to be operated without helmets.
