Pet food, there’s so many options out there that it can be a bit confusing for pet owners. There are two main types of pet food, the soft canned food and the hard dry bagged food. Canned cat food and dog food will last 18 to 24 months from the date it was packed unopened. Once opened, wet or soft food from the can should be stored below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. So the most appropriate place for an opened can of dog or cat food would be covered in the refrigerator. Do not keep the canned food for more than 3 days. After the 3rd day in the refrigerator the canned food should be thrown away. The dry bagged food will last unopened for a year to 15 months from the date it was packaged. Once opened, dry cat food or dry dog food should be stored in a cool dry place, somewhere below 80 degrees. An opened bag of dry food should be kept for no more than 90 days.
