The buckeye tree is the state tree of Ohio. Ohioans are so proud of their beloved buckeyes that they are considered the “buckeye state” and even use the buckeye as the mascot of The Ohio State University. Its name originated from the Native Americans who noticed that the glossy brown seeds of the buckeye tree looked a lot like that of the eye of a male deer, thus the term “buckeye” was born. They may not be earthly giants, but the buckeye tree can still grow from 30 to 50 feet in height and be as thick as 2 to 3 feet in diameter. The lifespan of a buckeye tree is normally 60 to 80 years.
