Why Summer Is the Right Time to Service Your Fireplace and Chimney in Northeast Ohio

Jul 13, 2026 | Local Business

Most homeowners think about their fireplace in October, when the first cold snap hits and they want to light a fire for the first time in months. By then, chimney sweeps and fireplace service technicians are booked out for weeks. Scheduling chimney cleaning and fireplace service in July or August means getting the work done on your timeline — not squeezing into the last available slot before the heating season begins.

What Annual Chimney Service Covers

A professional chimney inspection and cleaning does more than remove soot. A CSIA-certified chimney sweep evaluates the full system: the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, flue liner, cap, and exterior masonry. The things a sweep looks for include:

Creosote buildup — Creosote is a byproduct of wood combustion that accumulates on the flue liner. At light levels it’s an annoyance; at heavy buildup, it’s a fire hazard. NFPA 211 recommends annual cleaning and inspection for any chimney in use.

Flue liner condition — Clay tile liners crack from heat cycling over time; metal liners can corrode or separate at joints. A damaged liner allows combustion gases to contact combustible materials in the wall or attic, creating a serious hazard that’s invisible without inspection.

Damper operation — A damper that doesn’t seal properly wastes significant heat during winter. One that’s corroded or stuck can create draft problems or trap carbon monoxide.

Animal and debris intrusion — Summer is prime nesting season for chimney swifts, squirrels, and raccoons. A chimney cap in good condition keeps wildlife out; a damaged or missing cap is an open invitation.

Exterior masonry — Northeast Ohio’s freeze-thaw cycles attack the mortar joints in brick chimneys every winter. Summer inspection identifies spalling brick, deteriorating crown mortar, and flashing gaps before water intrusion causes interior damage.

Gas Fireplace Service

Gas fireplaces require annual service too — the checklist is different but equally important. A technician inspects the burner assembly, igniter, thermopile and thermocouple, gas connections, venting, and glass seal. Gas logs and inserts can develop burner deposits and pilot issues that reduce efficiency and, in some cases, create CO risks. A summer service call before the heating season begins ensures the system is clean, properly calibrated, and safe to operate.

Fireplace Inserts and Upgrades

If you have an older wood-burning fireplace that you rarely use because it’s drafty, inefficient, or simply inconvenient, summer is the best time to look at insert options. A wood or gas insert converts an open fireplace into an efficient, airtight heat source — and installation while the fireplace isn’t in use is far more convenient than scheduling it in November.

The same applies to replacing a worn gas log set, upgrading a builder-grade fireplace surround, or adding glass doors to an open fireplace. These projects are easier to schedule and complete outside of heating season.

Grills and Outdoor Kitchens

Summer is also when grills show their age. If your gas grill has uneven heat, ignition problems, rust on burners, or a cracked firebox, a service visit or replacement is worth doing before the summer season is over. Northfield carries Napoleon, Coyote, and Blaze grills alongside Traeger pellet grills and Big Green Egg — and offers white-glove delivery and setup.
